Calstock Arts- Gallery Bar Special with The Kit Hillbillies

The Kit Hillbillies are an acoustic string band playing a lively mix of bluegrass and old-time folk Americana. The sound is built around banjo, fiddle, guitar, mandolin and double bass, topped off with old-fashioned vocal harmonies. The core of the material is divided between fast instrumentals from the Flatt & Scruggs golden age of bluegrass and old-time songs from the Carter Family era. The band also covers an eclectic range of modern artists from Steve Earle to Radiohead.

The band’s original songs include many a knowing nod to the backwoods of Devon and Cornwall. “We usually avoid causing too much offence because happily people don’t always listen to the words,” comments banjo player, Calstock’s own Neil Gallacher. “Not always though – one song about Calstock, The Green Movement Blues, was offered in person to George Melly some years ago, and turned down flat on taste grounds. It’s still a staple of our set.”
