Phoenix 100 – Celebrating our Heritage
Following on from the recent reopening of the Minions Heritage Centre, a programme of free events is being arranged by the Phoenix 100 group through June and July to complement Liskeard Lions Carnival Week.
The events planned include a diverse range of guided walks and talks, exploring the rich cultural and natural heritage of the Caradon Hill / Minions area.
‘Bearah Tor’ at Liskeard Methodist Church, Monday 29th June, 7.30pm
A talk by Ian Piper on working the granite at the quarry on Bearah Tor
‘Lanhydrock History’ at Liskeard Methodist Church, Tuesday 30th June, 7.30pm
An illustrated talk by Lanhydrock volunteer Brian Oldham, looking at the Robartes’ family links with the Liskeard and Caradon area over the centuries
‘Ross Poldark’s View of the Moor’ at Minions, Thursday 2nd July, 1.15pm
Which of the historic remains around the Cheesewring might Ross Poldark have seen as he rode across the moor, and which were not of his era? A 3.5 mile circular walk will provide some of the answers.
Meet at the Hurlers Car Park, Minions at 1.15pm for a 1.30pm start. The walk will be led by Brian Oldham of Liskeard’s ‘Walkers are Welcome’ group. Mainly following farm tracks and disused railways it can be uneven under foot but will only include one short uphill section. There will be options to take a shorter route if necessary. Sorry, but no dogs on this walk.
‘The Discovery of Kober’ at Liskeard, Thursday 2nd July, 6pm
A Phoenix 100 Project, an evening of drama, music and dance telling the story of copper mining on Caradon Hill. The event consists of comedy sketches, high drama, Cornish dancing and music. A performance featuring Caradon Hill area primary schoolchildren, Scoots Kernow, and Play It Again Theatre Company will also take place and displays and refreshments will be available from 6pm. The performance commences at 7pm.
‘All Mine(s)’ at Minions, Saturday 4th July, 10am
Follow the tin and copper lodes and learn the history of the mines which were once major producers employing thousands. Meet outside Minions Post Office to take part in this circular walk led by Iain Rowe of Caradon Archaeology Group. Sorry, but no dogs on this walk.
Wildflower Walk with Colin French at Minions, Saturday 4th July, 2pm
Last year during Colin French’s walk two previously unrecorded plant species were discovered – what will be found this year?
Meet at Minions Interpretive Centre Car Park
All are welcome to come and join in the events. There are no charges but there will be a collection at each to help cover the costs so that we can do this again next year.
