Comet Spotting over Siblyback
December 15, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm| Free
Following on from the success of the Dark Skies Event at Siblyback Lake earlier in the year, South West Lakes Trust will be joining up with Caradon Observatory again to host another Dark Skies outreach event.
This will be a free observing event between 7pm and 10pm on Saturday 15 December. Wrap up warm and come along to see the magnificent skies that Siblyback and Bodmin Moor have to offer as a designated International Dark Sky landscape.
A purely observational event, there will be a range of telescopes to gaze through; the highlight will be the chance to see the closest approach of Comet 46P/Wirtanen. Clear skies permitting, there is a strong possibility that the comet will be visible with the naked eye from Siblyback Lake.
A first quarter Moon will be south at the start of the evening, with Mars and Neptune to the west. Orion and the Pleiades will be visible in the east. Comet 46P/Wirtanen will be just below the Pleiades on the 15th December.
In the event of rain or cloud, the event will be postponed; updates will be posted on the Caradon Observatory Facebook page on the days running up to the event to keep you all informed.
The Rock Hopper Café will also be open for refreshments during the evening, so why not pop along and make a meal of it? If you would like to book a meal in advance call 01579 343448.
All are welcome to this community star gazing event. For more information email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01579 346522. Read more here: https://www.swlakestrust.org.uk/events/comet-over-siblyback-a-caradon-observatory-and-siblyback-lake-dark-skies-event/
