Liskeard Arts Talk – Wilde about Oscar — the Life and Times of Oscar Wilde

December 10 @ 7:00 pm

| £8

Wilde about Oscar — the Life and Times of Oscar Wilde, a talk by Simon Whitehouse. Liskeard Public Hall, Tuesday 10th December. The hall is open from 7pm for refreshments –  coffee/tea, biscuits and wine – and conversation. The talk starts at 7.30 pm. Non-members are welcome to come along, admission is £8 per person (this will be deducted from your annual sub if you choose to join us on the day)

This talk examines the life and times of Oscar Wilde from his Irish roots to his days as a student at Oxford and his meteoric rise to the heights of celebrity.

We travel with him to the United States and examine his starring role within the artistic and theatrical worlds of late 19th-century London. We visit his home in bohemian Chelsea and some of his favourite West End haunts. Finally, we learn how ‘tired of being in the heights, he plunged into the depths’ and became famous for being INfamous …

Liskeard Arts Society is a member society of The Arts Society (https://theartssociety.org/). It was formed to bring together people who are curious about and interested in human artistic achievement in the world about us. So we give a series of beautifully illustrated lectures, and arrange visits to museums, galleries, houses and gardens, allowing you to increase and broaden your knowledge of art in the widest sense of the word, in the company of other like-minded people; our meetings are characterised by plenty of animated conversation.

Our annual programme includes nine monthly lectures and two Discovery Days on a wide range of subjects by Arts Society lecturers, all experts in their field. We also organise day visits and longer tours to places of artistic interest.

Most of our members come from South East and East Cornwall; members from other areas are always welcome to join us.
